The resignation of Prime minister and current political stalemate
Tuesday 08th of July 2008 [ ???????, ???? २४, २०६५ ]

It is the general public opinion that Prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala should have resigned after the results of the CA election were made public in which CPN (Maoist) emerged as the largest party winning 50% seats (out of total 240 seats) in the direct voting system. But he declined to resign in spite of pressure

from different political parties and the civil society to step down.  Due to continued pressure on him to step down and pave the way for the formation of the new government, Mr Girija Prasad Koirala finally announced his resignation in  the meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) on 26 June 2008.  PM Koirala's resignation will be officially approved once the new president is elected.Addressing the Constituent Assembly, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said said, "Even though I am gone, I hope the politics of understanding and unity will continue" .

Currently, parties are having intensive discussions for the election of the president, the formation of new government and restructuring of the sate. But the parities have not been able to reach consensus on any of these issues. On the other hand, the Terai/Madhesh based parties are continuing to obstruct the sitting of the constituent assembly demanding that the interim constitution be amended to insert the provision of  an autonomous Madhesh province in the federal structure. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved within few  days and new government will be formed.

Still there are conspiracies from different corners to derail the peace process and  prevent the country moving forward .
